A few years ago, I had to move to Sydney to join a leadership course that was six months long. I had never lived in a foreign land for so long it was a huge transformation in my life. The first few days were okay but things got uncomfortable very soon.

Then I realized that I was going through a huge change in my life. That’s when I started focusing on learning how to adapt myself according to the change I was experiencing. As a human being, we go through change almost every day in our lives.

It is important for us to be agile enough to cope with this change. In this article, I am going to discuss 10 tips that will help you out with it. Let’s start.

My first few weeks in Sydney were very comfortable and confusing. I was undergoing a shift in lifestyle, but I was unaware of it. I might have been able to get past it sooner if I had realized it sooner.

To be able to adjust to a change, it is critical to acknowledge and comprehend that you are going through it. The majority of individuals overlook this aspect and believe they are doing something wrong.

So, do not make this mistake and realize you’re going through a change. It will help in understanding what can be done to adapt to this change and get comfortable with it.

2. Use Cognitive Restructuring:

Cognitive restructuring is one of the most powerful techniques to overcome any type of uncomfortable situation. It involves understanding the things that are in and out of your control. It helps with to adopt the new healthy habits instead of trying to stick to the old environment feelings.

Here’s how my Sydney situation would’ve worked out with cognitive restructuring:

Things I can controlThings that I cannot control
Take it as a new experience and challenge myself to growCultural differences and people’s behavior
Making a proper schedule and routineOther people’s perspective about me
Engage with interesting peopleUnexpected daily situations

3. Practice Mindfulness:

Practicing mindfulness is another way of helping yourself adapt to the situation. Mindfulness means being aware of the surroundings and focusing on the present. It involves avoiding distractive thoughts and focusing all the energy on the present moment.

4. Manage Your Emotions:

The next important tip that I am going to talk about here is managing your emotions. Emotion management is a complete skill that is not only useful for handling change but also helpful in every other area of life.

Managing emotions means being in control of your emotional state and reacting to a situation after thinking carefully. When we’re experiencing a change, we might get frustrated a lot. Even small things can hyper or sadden us. So, it is important to filter out your emotions before giving a reaction to a person or a situation.

5. Build a Support System:

Building a support system is another important factor that you should focus on. Support systems mean reaching out to people who are or have experienced the same change. You can share your thoughts and ask for advice from these people.

It helps with venting out your feelings and being positive about the situation. Keep in mind that it also includes people who are qualified enough to provide guidance such as therapists.

Some things to do in order to execute this tip are:

Taking care of yourself is essential during periods of transition. A person has physical and emotional exhaustion when going through a change. In order to properly handle the obstacles, it is crucial that you look after yourself.

Self-care includes taking care of one’s physical and mental health. Both factors will help you to quickly adjust to the circumstances.

7. Maintain a Growth Mindset:

Maintaining a growth mindset is a very underrated tip. People should be giving it more credit since it helps a lot when it comes to dealing with the change. A growth mindset means that you’re mentally prepared to take on challenges that are faced in healthy living.

When you have growth, you see challenges as opportunities. It makes you able enough to grab the opportunities and get the best out of an uncomfortable situation. If you’re not sure how to maintain such a mindset, here are some points to follow:

  • Face hard things and do them bravely.
  • Learn from failures and try not to repeat mistakes.
  • Be curious and figure out ways to handle situations smoothly.
  • Be open to constructive feedback.

8. Celebrate Small Wins:

We all know that change is inevitable. However, it doesn’t have to be tough and boring. You should still be able to have fun while going through uncomfortable situations. The best way to do that is by celebrating small wins. It means that you appreciate yourself for going through small challenges daily.

It helps with staying motivated to achieve the next win. Keep doing this long enough and you’ll start enjoying the journey of change and adapt yourself to the surroundings easily. When you celebrate wins, it helps with building a positive mindset.

So, whether it is treating yourself for having the courage to join a support group or reading a motivational book, celebrating will help build the necessary momentum to adapt to change.

9. Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable:

Every person faces a different type of change in their lives. However, one thing that is common in each type of change is the feeling of being uncomfortable. Our brain is hardwired into getting uncomfortable when exposed to change.

So, instead of resisting, get comfortable with being uncomfortable. It may sound like a confusing thing but it will make sense when you start doing it. Train your brain not to respond too much when put in a conforming situation and it will start getting relaxed while experiencing a change.

10. Be Patient and Consistent:

Last but not least, you need to be patient and consistent. No matter how prepared you are, adapting to change is going to take a while. You will have to go through things again and again until they become normal again.

It is a complete process and you need to be consistent with your efforts to complete it. Have the courage and start believing in yourself. Stay persistent and you’ll master the art of being comfortable and adapt to change easily.

Final Overview

We all go through changes in our lives and it is completely normal to find it troublesome. Our brain is trained to avoid change and stay comfortable within a normal routine. However, it can be trained to deal with the change as well.
